New Year Website Refresh: 10 WordPress Upgrades to Start 2027

A January checklist for WordPress sites — clear the holiday decorations, prune plugins, check accessibility, fix mobile navigation, refresh the hero and contact page, add social proof and measure speed before and after.

A new year website refresh doesn't need a redesign. Clear out the holiday leftovers, prune plugins, check accessibility, then improve the few things visitors notice most: the mobile menu, the homepage hero, proof that others trust you, and the contact page. Here are ten upgrades in the order we'd do them, with the WPXERO plugins that handle each one — most of them free.

1. Take down the holidays

Snow in February looks like nobody's minding the site. In the first week of January:

  • Switch off seasonal effects — snow, lights, fireworks, snowflake cursors. With ExtenderX Pro you can schedule effects by date so they stop on their own next year.
  • Remove sale banners, countdowns and popups once the offer ends.
  • Update or unpublish holiday landing pages, and remove sale prices from product descriptions and emails still in the queue.

The Christmas and New Year effects guide lists where each effect is switched on.

2. Update and prune your plugins

Go through Plugins → Installed Plugins one by one:

  • Delete what you don't use. Deactivated plugins still need updating and still add risk.
  • Check each plugin's WordPress.org page for "Last updated" and "Tested up to". A plugin that hasn't been updated in a long time needs a replacement.
  • Look for overlap. Three plugins that each add an announcement bar, a popup and a back-to-top button can often be one — ExtenderX covers all three, and loads nothing for modules you leave off.

Update WordPress, your theme and PHP after a backup.

3. Check accessibility

Accessibility is part of being usable, and for many sites selling in the EU it's a legal requirement: the European Accessibility Act has applied to e-commerce and other services since June 28, 2025.

Start with the basics: real headings, alt text on meaningful images, enough contrast, everything reachable by keyboard, and labelled form fields. Then give visitors tools to adjust the page themselves.

ExtenderX is free and adds:

  • an Accessibility Toolbar with 11 tools (text size, readable font, high contrast, paused motion and more) and four one-click profiles — no account or cookies;
  • a Skip to Content link and configurable keyboard focus outlines.

ExtenderX Pro adds an Alt Text Audit for the media library, an Accessibility Statement generator and seven more toolbar tools. A toolbar doesn't make a site compliant on its own — it works alongside the fixes above. Our accessibility toolbar comparison covers the options.

4. Fix the mobile menu

Open your site on a phone and find your contact page. If that took more than two taps, start here.

MenuVerse builds a mobile hamburger menu and an app-style bottom bar from the WordPress menus you already have, and works with block themes. Keep five or six top-level items and put the most-used action — Shop, Book, Call — in the bottom bar. See the hamburger menu guide.

5. Refresh the homepage hero

The hero is what returning visitors see first, so a change there makes the whole site feel new. Instead of a heavy video, Animation Kit adds an animated WebGL background to any Group or Cover block, free:

  1. Select the hero's Group or Cover block.
  2. Switch on Animated background and pick an effect such as Aurora or Silk.
  3. Set your brand colours, add the readability overlay and choose what phones get.

Rewrite the headline while you're there: one sentence that says what you do and for whom. The animated hero background guide has the details.

6. Add proof that people trust you

A new year is a good time to collect last year's wins — new clients, reviews, press mentions — and put them on the homepage.

Use real names and real quotes, with permission. Invented testimonials do more harm than an empty space.

7. Make the contact page useful

Check that your address, phone and opening hours are written as text — not only in an image or a map — and match your Google Business Profile.

Then add a map. GeoVerse Maps is a free Google Maps block that works without an API key: insert the block, search for your address and publish. Add a free API key later if you want custom markers, directions or several locations. More in the contact page map guide.

8. Let visitors look around

If people visit you in person — a shop, hotel, venue, clinic or property — a 360° tour answers "what's it like inside?" before they call. Photo Sphere Viewer's free 360° Virtual Tour block links panoramas room to room with no scene limit and works with phone gyroscopes. The real estate virtual tour guide walks through shooting and building one.

9. Add one detail that feels like your brand

Small, consistent details make a site memorable. A custom cursor in your brand colour is one; Ultimate Cursor adds one free, with shape, image and animated styles. Keep it subtle — a small ring or dot reads as polish; a large animated trail reads as a gimmick — and know that it's hidden on phones and tablets, which have no pointer. Try styles on the cursor demo site.

10. Measure before and after

Run a speed test on your homepage and one key page before you start, and again when you're done. If a change made the page noticeably slower on mobile, dial it back: a lighter background on phones, fewer logos, one effect instead of two. Write the numbers down — they're next January's starting point.

Common Questions

Start with clean-up — remove holiday effects and expired offers, update or delete plugins, and check accessibility. Then improve the pages that matter most — mobile navigation, the homepage hero, social proof and the contact page — and measure speed before and after.

No. Most refreshes are small changes to a few key pages. A new hero background, a cleaner mobile menu and a logo strip can change how a site feels without a new theme.

No. A toolbar such as ExtenderX's helps visitors adjust the page, but compliance depends on the site itself — headings, alt text, contrast, keyboard access and forms. Use the toolbar alongside fixes to the content.

Yes. The 2026 Year-End Sale takes 20% off every Pro plan from December 20, 2026 to January 5, 2027, ending at 11:59 PM US Eastern time. The code is applied automatically at checkout.
