Christmas and New Year Effects for WordPress: Snow, Lights and Fireworks

Add falling snow, a snowflake cursor, Christmas lights, fireworks or a calm winter background to a WordPress site without code — what is free, what needs Pro, and how to keep it tasteful.

The quickest way to make a WordPress site feel festive is one well-chosen effect: falling snow across the page, a snowflake cursor, or Christmas lights along the top — and fireworks for New Year's Eve. This guide shows how to add each with WPXERO plugins, which parts are free, and how to keep it from getting in the way of your content.

Falling snow with ExtenderX (free)

ExtenderX's Seasonal Effects module has 18 site-wide effects; Winter Snow is one of the three free ones.

  1. Install ExtenderX from Plugins → Add New.
  2. Open ExtenderX → Site Enhancements → Seasonal Effects.
  3. Turn on Winter Snow and save.

ExtenderX Pro adds Christmas Lights and Fireworks — Fireworks suits New Year's Eve — along with scheduling by date range, page targeting and per-effect colors. Scheduling lets you set snow for December, lights for the week of Christmas and fireworks for December 31 to January 1 in one sitting.

All effects honor the visitor's reduced-motion setting automatically.

A snowflake cursor with Ultimate Cursor (free)

Ultimate Cursor's Snowflake effect makes snowflakes fall from the mouse pointer as visitors move it. It's one of eight animated cursor effects in the free plugin, with a ready-made style.

  1. Install Ultimate Cursor and open its dashboard.
  2. Choose the Animated cursor type, then Snowflake.
  3. Check the live preview and save.

Ultimate Cursor Pro adds settings for Snowflake and Trail — the emojis, sizes, counts and speed — so you can swap snowflakes for 🎄 or 🎁, or tone the effect down. You can try the effect before installing on the Snowflake cursor demo.

The cursor is hidden on phones and tablets, and its scripts aren't downloaded there.

A calm winter background with Animation Kit (free)

If falling particles feel too busy for your site, an animated background behind a hero section is a quieter option. Animation Kit's free effects include Aurora (flowing color washes), Particles (a drifting particle cloud) and Silk (slow folds). Set them to cool blues and white for a wintry hero.

To animate only one section, select a Group or Cover block in the editor and switch on Animated background in its settings. Animation Kit's readability overlay keeps text on top legible, and you can choose per background whether phones get the full animation, a lighter version, a still image or nothing.

Announce your holiday offer

A scrolling strip at the top of the page is still the clearest way to tell visitors about a year-end sale. MarqueeX's free Text Marquee block (or its Elementor widget) does it in a couple of minutes. ExtenderX's free Announcement Bar is the static alternative.

The Black Friday sale checklist covers dates, coupons and honest countdowns — the same rules apply to a Christmas or New Year sale.

Keep it tasteful

  • One effect at a time. Snow plus a snowflake cursor plus an animated background is too much. Choose one.
  • Keep it out of checkout. Use ExtenderX Pro's page targeting or Animation Kit's section backgrounds to keep effects off cart and checkout pages.
  • Mind readability. Falling white snow over light text is hard to read. Test your pages with the effect running.
  • Switch it off on time. Snow in February looks forgotten. Schedule an end date (ExtenderX Pro) or set a reminder for early January.

WPXERO's year-end offers on Pro plans are listed on the deals page.

Common Questions

Install the free ExtenderX plugin, go to ExtenderX → Site Enhancements → Seasonal Effects and turn on Winter Snow. It runs site-wide and follows the visitor's reduced-motion setting.

Yes. Ultimate Cursor's free Snowflake effect makes snowflakes fall from the mouse pointer. Pro adds settings for the emojis, size, count and speed.

Christmas Lights and Fireworks are ExtenderX Pro effects. The free plugin includes Winter Snow, Autumn Leaves and Falling Hearts.

ExtenderX's seasonal effects respect the visitor's reduced-motion setting. Ultimate Cursor's cursor is hidden on touch devices, which have no pointer. Animation Kit lets you choose full animation, a lighter version, a still image or nothing on phones.
