A custom cursor helps a WooCommerce store when it shows shoppers what they can click and matches a premium brand — a small dot that grows over products, or a "View" label over the gallery. It hurts when it covers product photos, distracts from the price or follows shoppers into checkout. Use a subtle cursor site-wide, add hover cues on product grids, and keep it off cart and checkout.
Where a cursor helps a store
Product grids and categories. A cursor that grows over product cards tells shoppers the whole card is clickable. Ultimate Cursor's free shape cursors grow their ring over links and buttons; with Pro's Interactive Hover the cursor can also show a label such as "View" or "Shop".
Product galleries. A "Zoom" or "View" label over the main product image signals that it opens larger. That's a Pro hover label set for the gallery's CSS selector.
Calls to action. A cursor that pulls gently toward the add-to-cart button and changes colour draws attention to the one action you want. Use the magnetic pull lightly — a strong pull feels like the button is grabbing the mouse.
Brand moments. Fashion, beauty, design and gift stores often want the site to feel crafted. A cursor in the brand colour, or an icon cursor such as a small bag or sparkle, does that without touching the theme.
Where a cursor hurts
- Cart and checkout. Shoppers are entering addresses and card details. Nothing should move or change near the payment form. Use the default pointer.
- Long trails over product photos. Emoji or rainbow trails cover the product shoppers are trying to see. Save them for a campaign landing page, if anywhere.
- Low contrast. A white cursor over white product backgrounds disappears. Pick a colour that shows on both your photos and your page background.
- Big cursors. A large image cursor hides what's under it. Keep it small, or set the image hotspot (Pro) so the click point is obvious.
Ultimate Cursor already keeps the normal text cursor in form fields, hides the custom cursor on phones and tablets, and turns animations off for visitors who reduce motion.
A setup that works for most stores
- Install Ultimate Cursor from Plugins → Add New and open its dashboard.
- Choose a Shape cursor — a small circle or ring — in a colour from your brand. Save. This is your site-wide cursor (free).
- Check the shop page: move over product cards and buttons and make sure the ring grows and stays visible on your product photos.
- With Pro, add a second configuration for the product gallery or grid with Interactive Hover: a "View" label, a slight scale-up and your accent colour.
- With Pro, exclude cart, checkout and account pages using page targeting.
The free version stops at step 3, which is enough for many stores.
What about animated effects?
Animated cursors such as Bubble suit a store with a playful or premium feel if used lightly. Click effects (Click Spark) give satisfying feedback on add-to-cart without constant motion. Trail, Rainbow and Snowflake effects are better kept to seasonal campaigns — see the Christmas and New Year effects guide.
Performance on a store
Stores are sensitive to speed, so it's worth knowing what a cursor costs:
- Only the effect your configuration uses is downloaded, as a separate file.
- On touch devices the cursor is hidden and its scripts aren't downloaded.
- The cursor and backgrounds make no external requests.
- It includes compatibility handling for caching and optimization plugins such as WP Rocket, LiteSpeed Cache and Perfmatters.
Run a speed test on a product page before and after enabling it. More detail is in do custom cursors slow down WordPress?
