To add a cursor trail in WordPress, install the free Ultimate Cursor plugin, choose the Animated cursor type and pick a trail-style effect — Trail (emoji), Bubble, Rainbow or Character. It runs site-wide on devices with a mouse, stays off on touch screens and switches off for visitors who reduce motion. Pro lets you change the emoji, size, count and speed.
Which trail fits your site?
Ultimate Cursor has four effects that follow the mouse as a trail, all free:
| Effect | What follows the mouse | Feel | Demo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trail | A stream of emoji (✨ by default) that fades out | Playful | Try it |
| Bubble | A soft circle trailing just behind the pointer | Subtle | Try it |
| Rainbow | A multicolour gradient line | Bold | Try it |
| Character | Letters or symbols near the pointer | Typographic | Try it |
The Snowflake effect scatters particles around the pointer — closer to a seasonal trail — and Splash leaves a fluid ripple.
For most business sites, Bubble is the safe choice. Use Trail or Rainbow when the brand is playful, and Character to repeat a word or symbol.
Set it up
- In Plugins → Add New, search for Ultimate Cursor, then install and activate it.
- Open Ultimate Cursor in the dashboard.
- Choose the Animated cursor type.
- Pick Trail, Bubble, Rainbow or Character. The live preview shows it straight away.
- For Bubble, set the size and colours (free). Click Save.
Move your mouse across your homepage to check it against your real colours and text.
Customise the trail (Pro)
The free effects come with ready-made styles. Ultimate Cursor Pro adds settings for each:
- Trail and Snowflake: the emojis, sizes, counts and speed. A café can trail ☕, a pet shop 🐾, a florist 🌸 — or set the count low so it's barely there.
- Rainbow: your own colours, so the trail matches your palette instead of the full spectrum.
- Character: your own characters — a brand name, initials or a symbol.
Pro also lets you target the trail by page or CSS selector, so it can run on a landing page or portfolio and stay off your shop and checkout.
Other ways to get a cursor trail
From each plugin's WordPress.org readme as of October 27, 2026.
- Cursor Style & Animation adds canvas-based trail, particle, ripple and magnetic effects behind the normal pointer, with trail length, size and colour settings. It respects reduced motion. Its readme lists testing up to WordPress 6.9, and it has 70+ active installs.
- Smooth Custom Cursor has Bubble Trail and Character Trail styles that release bubbles or letters from a normal-looking arrow, among nine styles. See our Smooth Custom Cursor comparison.
- HappyAddons for Elementor has an Image Trail effect that makes images follow the cursor — good for a portfolio hero, but Elementor only.
- Code: a canvas trail is a few dozen lines of JavaScript, but you then have to handle touch devices, reduced motion and performance yourself.
Keep the trail from getting in the way
- Short and light. A trail that lingers or covers text makes reading harder. Fewer, smaller particles look more polished.
- One effect. A trail plus a click burst plus an animated background is too much. Pick one.
- Not on forms. Ultimate Cursor keeps the normal text cursor in form fields; with Pro targeting you can also turn the trail off on checkout and contact pages.
- Contrast. White sparkles vanish on a white page; check the trail on your lightest and darkest sections.
- Respect motion settings. Ultimate Cursor turns its animations off for visitors whose device asks for reduced motion — don't override that with custom code.
