MapPress Alternative: GeoVerse Maps vs MapPress for WordPress

MapPress offers keyless OpenStreetMap maps, GPX tracks and drawing tools, with search, filters and custom icons in Pro. GeoVerse Maps is a Google Maps block with search, filters and custom icons free. A side-by-side comparison.

Choose MapPress if you want maps with no API key or billing account at all — keyless OpenStreetMap tiles — or need GPX tracks, KML overlays, drawing tools or marker clustering. Choose GeoVerse Maps if you want Google Maps with custom marker icons, category filters, a search box and a marker list for free, which MapPress keeps in Pro.

Disclosure: WPXERO makes GeoVerse Maps; this comparison covers version 1.5.2. What we say about MapPress (version 2.97.14) comes from its WordPress.org readme as of October 27, 2026. MapPress has 30,000+ active installs; GeoVerse Maps is new.

What MapPress does well

MapPress works as soon as you activate it. Its standout is keyless interactive maps: Leaflet with OpenFreeMap tiles built on OpenStreetMap data, with no API key, billing account or fees. Google Maps and Mapbox are there too.

The free version is broad: unlimited maps and markers, block and classic-editor support, styled maps, marker clustering, popups with text, photos and links, Google traffic, bicycling and transit overlays, directions via Google Maps, geocoding from Google, Nominatim or Mapbox, KML overlays, GPX tracks, drawing polygons, circles and lines, PHP map generation, and WPML and multisite support.

MapPress Pro adds searchable maps and store locators with geolocation and filtering, custom marker uploads with an icon editor, a mashup block and widgets, list and marker templates, maps generated from custom fields and ACF, and automatic icons by taxonomy.

Pick it if: you want to avoid Google's API and billing entirely, show hiking or cycling routes (GPX), draw areas, or cluster many markers.

What GeoVerse Maps does differently

GeoVerse Maps is Google-only, and has no paid version. Without a key it shows a keyless embedded map of one location. With a free Google Maps API key, everything opens up at no extra cost from the plugin:

  • Custom marker icons and unlimited markers.
  • Marker categories with front-end filtering and a visitor search box.
  • A clickable marker list below or beside the map.
  • Directions drawn on the map from the visitor's location — driving, walking, bicycling or transit.
  • Style presets (Default, Bright, Dark, Light, Pale Dawn) or your own JSON, e.g. from Snazzy Maps. See how to style a Google map.
  • Traffic, transit and bicycling layers, fullscreen and responsive height.

Assets load only on pages where the block is used.

Where it falls short: Google only, an API key and billing account for anything beyond the embed, no clustering, no GPX/KML or drawing tools, no classic-editor support.

The real trade-off: Google vs OpenStreetMap

MapPress's biggest advantage is keyless OpenStreetMap. GeoVerse's is free Google features. If you're unsure which map service you want, read Google Maps vs OpenStreetMap in WordPress first — the choice of plugin follows from it.
