WP Go Maps Alternative: GeoVerse Maps vs WP Go Maps

WP Go Maps supports many map engines but keeps directions, categories, custom icons and marker lists in Pro. GeoVerse Maps is a Google Maps block with all of those free. Which suits your WordPress site.

Choose GeoVerse Maps if you want Google Maps in the block editor with directions, category filters, custom marker icons, a search box and a marker list — all free. Choose WP Go Maps if you need OpenStreetMap or other map engines, polygons and routes, an Elementor or classic-widget integration, or its Pro store locator and CSV import.

Disclosure: WPXERO makes GeoVerse Maps; this comparison covers version 1.5.2. What we say about WP Go Maps (version 10.1.10) comes from its WordPress.org readme as of October 27, 2026. WP Go Maps has 300,000+ active installs; GeoVerse Maps is new.

What WP Go Maps does well

WP Go Maps is one of the most-installed map plugins. Its free version is generous on engines: Google Maps, Leaflet, OpenLayers and several commercial tile providers, including keyless options. It also includes unlimited markers added by address, nine map themes and your own, draggable markers, Street View, polygons and polylines for delivery areas and routes, a basic store locator with country restriction, autocomplete, and integrations for Elementor, the block editor and classic widgets.

Its Pro edition adds multiple maps, directions, marker descriptions, images and links, categories and filtering, custom icons, marker lists, CSV import/export, KML/KMZ import, the visitor's location and an advanced store locator.

Pick it if: you want OpenStreetMap or another engine, need polygons or routes, build in Elementor or classic widgets, or need CSV import of many locations.

What GeoVerse Maps does differently

GeoVerse Maps is a single Google Maps block for the block editor, with no paid version:

  • Start without a key. Insert the block, search for your address, and you have a keyless embedded map. See Google Maps without an API key.
  • Add a key for everything else — free: unlimited markers with custom icons, rich info windows (hours, phone, links), categories with front-end filtering, a visitor search box, a clickable marker list below or beside the map, style presets (Default, Bright, Dark, Light, Pale Dawn) or your own style JSON, traffic, transit and bicycling layers, and directions from the visitor's location by car, on foot, by bike or by transit.
  • Light. Assets load only on pages where the block is used.

The things WP Go Maps keeps in Pro — directions, categories, custom icons, lists — are where GeoVerse gives the most for free.

Where it falls short: Google only (no OpenStreetMap), no polygons or routes, no shortcode or Elementor widget, no CSV import, and its search finds places rather than "stores within 25 miles". For radius search, see our free store locator guide.

Cost of the map itself

Both plugins are wrappers around a map service. With Google Maps, an API key and a Google Cloud billing account are needed for interactive maps, and Google applies its own pricing and free usage allowance. Keyless engines like OpenStreetMap avoid that — a real advantage of WP Go Maps for high-traffic sites. See Google Maps vs OpenStreetMap and how to get a Google Maps API key.

Common Questions

Its Lite version is free, with unlimited markers, several map engines, a map block, an Elementor integration, themes, polygons, polylines and a basic store locator. Directions, marker categories and filtering, custom marker icons, marker lists and multiple maps are in the Pro edition.

Nothing. GeoVerse Maps has no paid version; custom icons, categories with filtering, directions, a search box, a marker list, style presets and map layers are all free. Google's own usage terms apply once you add an API key.

No. GeoVerse Maps uses Google Maps only. If you want OpenStreetMap or Leaflet, WP Go Maps or MapPress support them.

Not for a basic map — it shows a keyless embedded Google map of your location. Markers, styles, search, filters, directions and layers need a Google Maps API key.
