What Responsive Menu does well
Responsive Menu turns any WordPress menu into a hamburger button and slide-in panel, and lets you adjust nearly everything from a live editor: every colour with opacity, fonts and sizes, side and animation, button position, breakpoint, sub-menu depth and active-item highlighting. The free version also includes search, a logo and title, social and action icons (call, email), custom HTML in the menu, and hiding items by login state or role.
It's careful about accessibility: the menu button is a real <button> with aria-expanded, focus stays inside the open menu, Escape closes it, focus outlines are visible, reduced motion is respected, and the developers publish axe-core test results.
Pro adds a desktop and mega menu with multi-column dropdowns, a header bar, 26 animated hamburger buttons, font icons on items, per-page display, a WooCommerce menu cart with item count, WPML and Polylang, and scroll lock.
Pick it if: you want a single, deeply customisable hamburger menu, free role-based items, or a desktop mega menu from the same plugin.
What MenuVerse does differently
MenuVerse is built around two patterns:
- Bottom Menu — an app-style navigation bar pinned to the bottom of the screen. Four buttons free, with a More drawer; buttons can open a page, a URL or a search sheet for the site, WooCommerce products or Easy Digital Downloads. Labels, badges, five current-page styles and safe-area padding for notched phones.
- Mobile Menu — an off-canvas hamburger menu with accordion submenus that open at the visitor's current branch, an optional logo top bar, body scroll lock, a focus trap and focus return.
Both read the menus you already maintain — classic menus and block Navigation menus — and MenuVerse restores Appearance → Menus on block themes that hide it. Each module is under 6 KB gzipped, written in vanilla JavaScript, with SVG icons bundled and no CDN calls. You place menus with a block, shortcode, PHP template tag or optional auto-insertion.
MenuVerse Pro adds WhatsApp and phone buttons, live cart and wishlist counts, per-button visibility by role or sign-in state, page rules, gradients, frosted glass and a dark-mode palette, plus push and full-screen menus, search and social links in the panel, swipe-to-close and hiding the theme's menu on small screens. From $19.99 a year.
Why a bottom bar matters
A hamburger menu hides navigation behind a tap. A bottom bar keeps the four or five things most visitors want — Shop, Search, Cart, Account, Call — within thumb reach on every page. For stores, restaurants, clinics and any site where visitors come to do something, that's often the bigger win. Responsive Menu doesn't offer a bottom bar; with MenuVerse it's the free core feature.
You can also combine them: keep Responsive Menu for the hamburger panel and add MenuVerse's bottom bar on its own — MenuVerse modules switch on independently, and a disabled module outputs nothing.
