Pano2VR and Garden Gnome Package vs Photo Sphere Viewer: Desktop Tour Software or a WordPress Plugin?

Garden Gnome Package publishes tours made in Pano2VR on WordPress; Photo Sphere Viewer builds them inside WordPress. When the desktop workflow is worth it, and when a plugin is faster.

Garden Gnome Package and Photo Sphere Viewer solve different problems. Garden Gnome Package publishes tours you build in Pano2VR, a professional desktop application with custom skins and detailed tour logic. Photo Sphere Viewer lets you build the tour inside WordPress from your photos, free, in minutes. Choose Pano2VR for bespoke, production-grade tours; choose Photo Sphere Viewer when the people updating the site should be able to build and edit tours themselves.

Disclosure: WPXERO makes Photo Sphere Viewer; this comparison covers version 2.4.0. What we say about Garden Gnome Package (version 2.5.4) comes from its WordPress.org readme as of October 27, 2026. Pano2VR and Object2VR are commercial desktop applications from Garden Gnome Software; see their website for current editions and prices.

Two workflows

Pano2VR + Garden Gnome Package

  1. Build the tour in Pano2VR on your computer: scenes, hotspots, transitions, the player skin.
  2. Export a .ggpkg package.
  3. Upload it to WordPress and embed it with [ggpkg id=12], the GGPKG block or the Garden Gnome Package Elementor widget.
  4. To change anything, edit in Pano2VR, export again and replace the package.

Photo Sphere Viewer

  1. Upload your stitched equirectangular photos to the Media Library.
  2. Insert the 360° Virtual Tour block (or the PSV Virtual Tour Elementor widget).
  3. Pick the scenes, click on each doorway to place a 3D arrow, set captions and starting views, add hotspots by clicking on the photo.
  4. To change anything, edit the block and update the page.

When Pano2VR is worth it

Pano2VR is the professional's tool. It's the better choice when:

  • The tour is a product you deliver — a museum, a resort, a campus — and the client expects a custom-branded player and polished transitions.
  • You need logic the plugin can't express, such as complex hotspot behaviours or a custom interface.
  • You make object movies for product spins with Object2VR.
  • You already own it and have a library of projects.

Garden Gnome Package does its part well: a clean block and widget, a preview-image option so the heavy player loads only when clicked, deep links to a starting scene and angle, and a security setting that limits who can upload packages.

When a WordPress plugin is faster

  • Your team updates the tours. A property agent adding a new listing, or a hotel swapping a renovated room, can do it in the block editor without the original project file or desktop software.
  • You have many small tours. Ten listings of eight rooms each is quicker to build in the page than to export and upload as packages.
  • You want everything on your site. Photo Sphere Viewer serves your images from your Media Library, with no iframes and no third-party embed account. Viewer scripts load only on pages that contain a viewer.
  • You want other formats too. The same plugin shows 360° video and AR 3D models.
  • Budget. The free version has no limit on tours or scenes; Pro adds unlimited hotspots with photos, a scene gallery and compass, a restricted viewing angle and full-resolution loading for drone panoramas from $19.99 a year.

Can you use both?

Yes. Many photographers deliver a flagship tour as a Pano2VR package and use Photo Sphere Viewer for quick panoramas in blog posts, product pages and listings. The two don't conflict, as long as each page uses one viewer for a given tour.

Getting the best from either

  • Shoot clean equirectangular images (2:1). Both work with stitched exports from Ricoh Theta, Insta360, GoPro MAX, DJI drones and similar.
  • Watch the 2560px limit. WordPress creates a -scaled copy of large uploads. Photo Sphere Viewer Pro loads the original; see why drone panoramas look blurry.
  • Set a good starting view in each scene — the first thing a visitor sees should be the best angle.

Common Questions

It embeds packages (.ggpkg files) exported from Garden Gnome Software's Pano2VR and Object2VR desktop apps, through a shortcode, a block or an Elementor widget. The tour itself is built in the desktop software, not in WordPress.

Yes. The plugin publishes packages created with Pano2VR (panoramas and tours) or Object2VR (object movies); it doesn't build tours by itself.

Yes. You upload stitched equirectangular photos to the Media Library, insert the 360° Virtual Tour block, select the scenes and click on each doorway to place arrows — all inside the block editor.

When you produce tours professionally and need custom player skins, detailed tour logic or object movies, and you're happy to author on a desktop and upload the result.
