You can give a WordPress site a Halloween look in about fifteen minutes without touching code: falling autumn leaves or Halloween bats across the page, a themed cursor, and a scrolling banner announcing your sale. This guide shows how with three WPXERO plugins, what is free and what needs Pro, and how to make sure it all disappears on November 1.
What you need
| Effect | Plugin | Free or Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Falling autumn leaves | ExtenderX | Free |
| Halloween bats | ExtenderX | Pro |
| Start and stop effects by date | ExtenderX | Pro |
| Pumpkin or ghost cursor (your own image) | Ultimate Cursor | Free |
| Emoji trail behind the cursor | Ultimate Cursor | Trail is free; choosing your own emojis is Pro |
| Scrolling "Halloween sale" banner | MarqueeX | Free |
| Dismissible offer bar at the top of the page | ExtenderX | Free |
All three plugins are free on WordPress.org. Install only the ones you need.
1. Add falling leaves or bats with ExtenderX
ExtenderX has a Seasonal Effects module with 18 site-wide effects. Three are free — Winter Snow, Autumn Leaves and Falling Hearts — and Autumn Leaves suits late October well.
- Install ExtenderX from Plugins → Add New.
- Go to ExtenderX → Site Enhancements → Seasonal Effects.
- Turn on Autumn Leaves and save.
ExtenderX Pro adds Halloween Bats along with Christmas Lights, Fireworks and Black Friday and Cyber Monday confetti. Pro also lets you schedule an effect by date range, limit it to specific pages and change its colors. Scheduling is the useful part for a holiday: set the bats to run from October 24 to October 31 and you never have to remember to switch them off.
Every seasonal effect honors the visitor's reduced-motion setting automatically, so people who turn animations off in their operating system don't see them.
2. Swap the mouse pointer with Ultimate Cursor
Ultimate Cursor replaces the default pointer site-wide from one dashboard with a live preview. For Halloween, two free options work well:
- Image cursor — upload a small PNG or SVG of a pumpkin, a ghost or a witch's hat and it follows the mouse. Pro adds a hotspot setting so you can choose which point of the image does the clicking.
- Click Particles or Click Spark — a burst of particles on every click. The free version uses a ready-made style; Pro adds settings for both effects.
The Trail effect leaves a line of emojis behind the cursor. The free version uses its ready-made style; Pro lets you choose the emojis, so 🎃 👻 🦇 is a two-minute change.
The custom cursor is hidden on phones and tablets, and its scripts aren't downloaded there. Keep the image small — around 32 to 48 pixels — so it doesn't hide what visitors are pointing at. 10 custom cursor effects and when to use each covers when a cursor helps and when it gets in the way.
3. Announce the sale with a scrolling banner
If you're running a Halloween offer, put it where people will see it.
MarqueeX (free) adds a Text Marquee block in the block editor and a matching Elementor widget. Type "Halloween sale — 25% off everything until October 31", set the speed and drop it at the top of your homepage or shop. There is no marquee limit or watermark in the free version.
ExtenderX's Announcement Bar (free) is the alternative if you want a single dismissible bar at the top or bottom of every page instead of a moving strip. ExtenderX Pro adds a Global Countdown Banner with a site-wide timer, which works well for the last 48 hours of a sale.
Use one or the other, not both — two banners compete for attention.
Keep it fast and readable
- Pick one moving effect per page. Falling bats plus a cursor trail plus a scrolling marquee is a lot of motion. Choose the one that matters most — usually the sale banner.
- Check contrast. Orange text on a dark purple banner is festive and hard to read. Keep body text on its normal colors.
- Test checkout. Effects shouldn't cover buttons or form fields. Click through to the end of your checkout once with everything on.
- Plan the switch-off. Put "remove Halloween effects" in your calendar for November 1, or use ExtenderX Pro's date scheduling.
Reuse it for the rest of the season
The same setup carries straight into the next few months. Swap Autumn Leaves for Winter Snow in December, change the cursor to Ultimate Cursor's free Snowflake effect, and update the marquee text for Black Friday. ExtenderX Pro's Black Friday and Cyber Monday confetti and Christmas Lights are scheduled the same way as the bats.
WPXERO runs its own seasonal sales on Pro plans — current offers are on the deals page.
