Ultimate Cursor is a free WordPress plugin that replaces the default mouse pointer with a custom cursor — text, an image, an icon, a shape or an animated effect — and can add an animated background behind your pages. You set it up in a dashboard with a live preview, with no code, shortcodes or page-builder widgets. An optional Pro add-on makes the cursor react to links and buttons and lets you target cursors to specific pages or elements.

What you can build with Ultimate Cursor
- A branded cursor — your own text label, an uploaded image, one of 113 built-in icons, or a geometric shape.
- An animated cursor — one of eight effects that react to mouse movement or clicks.
- An animated background — floating particles or a glowing light pillar rendered behind your content.
- An interactive cursor (Pro) — one that grows, recolors, glows, pulls toward buttons and shows labels such as "Open" or "Play".

The five cursor types
You pick one cursor type per configuration under Ultimate Cursor → General Settings → Select Cursor Type.

The eight animated cursor effects
All eight effects are included in the free plugin, each with a ready-made style. Bubble's size and colors can be changed for free; Pro adds the settings to restyle every other effect.
- Bubble — a soft circle that trails the pointer.
- Splash — a fluid splash that ripples out from the pointer.
- Snowflake — falling emoji particles (❄️ by default).
- Trail — a trail of emoji (✨ by default) behind the pointer.
- Character — a sequence of letters or symbols that appear as the pointer moves.
- Rainbow — a multi-color gradient trail.
- Click Spark — a burst of lines from each click.
- Click Particles — a particle burst from each click.
Only one effect runs per cursor configuration. If you want a continuously visible follower, choose Bubble, Rainbow or Trail; if you want feedback only when people click, choose Click Spark or Click Particles. 10 custom cursor effects and when to use each goes deeper on choosing one.
Animated backgrounds
Separate from the cursor, the Background tab adds a full-page animated background rendered with WebGL behind your content:
- Antigravity — floating particles. Free settings: color, particle count, size and shape. Pro adds motion controls such as magnet and ring radius, field strength, wave, pulse and rotation.
- Light Pillar — a glowing vertical light. Free settings: color, width, height and rotation. Pro adds intensity, glow, noise, mouse interaction, blend mode and quality.
Pro also controls placement — position, stacking order and opacity — and can limit a background to chosen pages or a CSS selector, or run several backgrounds at once.
Interactive Hover (Pro)
Interactive Hover makes the cursor respond when a visitor points at a link, a button or a form field. It can scale up, change color, glow, be pulled magnetically toward the center of the element, and display a label inside the cursor. Disabled buttons are deliberately ignored, so the cursor never invites a click that won't work. You can add your own CSS selectors for custom interactive elements. If a Pro license lapses, your Pro settings are kept in the database and come back when the license is active again; the site falls back to the free behavior in the meantime. Current plans are on the Ultimate Cursor pricing page.
How to set up Ultimate Cursor
- In your WordPress admin, go to Plugins → Add New, search for "Ultimate Cursor", then click Install Now and Activate.
- Open the new Ultimate Cursor menu in the dashboard sidebar.
- Choose a cursor type — Text, Image, Icon, Shapes or Animated.
- Adjust the settings under Customize Your Cursor. Move your mouse over the Preview panel to see the result live.
- Click Save Changes. The cursor is now active across your site.
- Optional: open the Background tab, choose Antigravity or Light Pillar, and save.

Performance and accessibility
A custom cursor runs on every page view, so it has to be light and it must never leave visitors without a pointer. Ultimate Cursor is built around that:
- A 1.5 KB loader is the only script loaded up front. It decides in the browser whether a cursor will show, and only then downloads the effect you chose.
- Each effect is its own file, so a site using Bubble never downloads the Splash or Rainbow code.
- Touch devices are skipped by default — no pointer, no download.
- Animation pauses while the pointer is still.
- Reduced motion is respected: visitors who ask their operating system for less motion don't see animated effects.
- Form fields keep the normal text cursor, and if an effect fails to load, the default pointer stays visible.
It also includes compatibility handling for common caching and optimization plugins — WP Rocket, LiteSpeed Cache, SiteGround Optimizer, Perfmatters, WP-Optimize and Cloudflare Rocket Loader — and it stays out of page-builder editing screens and the Customizer preview.
When a custom cursor is a good idea — and when it isn't
A custom cursor works best when it carries meaning, not just decoration:
- Portfolios and agencies — a "View" label over project thumbnails tells visitors the card is clickable.
- Stores and landing pages — a cursor that changes only over buttons and product cards draws attention to the next step.
- Campaigns and seasonal sites — snowfall for the holidays or click sparks on launch day, switched off again in one click.
It is usually the wrong choice for long-form reading — documentation, news, text-heavy blogs — where an animated pointer competes with the content. If you do use one there, prefer a small shape or icon over a continuous animated effect, and keep Interactive Hover subtle.
Compatibility
Ultimate Cursor works with any properly coded theme and on pages built with Gutenberg, Elementor, Divi, WPBakery, Bricks, Beaver Builder, Avada and Oxygen, because the cursor is added to the page itself and needs no template changes. It requires WordPress 6.0 or newer and PHP 7.4 or newer; background effects need a browser with WebGL.
