Smart Slider 3 Alternative for the Block Editor: SlideVerse vs Smart Slider 3

Smart Slider 3 is a powerful layer-based slider builder with its own editor. SlideVerse adds slider blocks you edit right in the block editor. When each is the better choice, with features and free limits compared.

Choose Smart Slider 3 if you want a full slider design studio — layers you position freely, a slide library, background animations and templates — and don't mind building sliders in a separate editor. Choose SlideVerse if you want sliders that are ordinary blocks, edited in the page alongside your content, with nine slider types free and nothing loaded on pages without a slider.

Disclosure: WPXERO makes SlideVerse; this comparison covers SlideVerse 0.2.2. What we say about Smart Slider 3 (version 3.5.1.39) comes from its WordPress.org readme as of October 27, 2026. Smart Slider 3 has 800,000+ active installs; SlideVerse is new.

Two ways of working

Smart Slider 3 is a slider builder. You open its editor, choose a template or blank slider, and design each slide with layers — heading, text, image, button, YouTube, Vimeo — placed in rows and columns or dragged anywhere with absolute positioning. Then you insert the finished slider into a page with a block, shortcode or page-builder widget.

SlideVerse is a set of slider blocks. You insert, say, an Image Slider block, add slides, and adjust slides per view, arrows, autoplay and styles in the block sidebar — in the same editor and preview as the rest of the page.

Where Smart Slider 3 is stronger

Smart Slider 3 is one of the most capable free slider plugins. Its strengths:

  • Design freedom. Absolute layers you drag anywhere, layer snapping, adaptive font sizes and hiding layers per device.
  • A head start. 15 template sliders and a slide library.
  • Motion. Nine background animations and static overlays.
  • Works everywhere. Block editor, Elementor, Divi, Beaver Builder, WPBakery and more, through its block, shortcode or widgets, plus multisite support.

If you design marketing banners with overlapping layers and precise positions, or you want the same slider on an Elementor page and a block page, Smart Slider 3 is hard to beat.

Watch out for: a second editor to learn and switch to, sliders that live outside your page content, and — at the time of writing — a WordPress.org "tested up to" of 7.0.7 while WordPress is on 7.1.

Where SlideVerse is stronger

SlideVerse is built for people who already work in the block editor:

  • Edit in place. The slider is a block. Add slides, rearrange them, change settings and see the result in the page, without opening another screen.
  • More slider types free. Nine blocks: Base Slider & Hero Carousel, Image Slider & Photo Carousel, Flexi Content Slider (slides built from any blocks), Infinite Slider (marquee), Post Slider, Logo Carousel, Testimonial Slider, Video Slider and Before After comparison.
  • Per-device settings. Slides per view, spacing and speed separately for desktop, tablet and mobile.
  • Careful with motion. Autoplay pauses on hover and focus, and stays off for visitors who prefer reduced motion.
  • Light. Scripts and styles load only on pages that contain a SlideVerse block, all from your own site — nothing from a CDN. Unused blocks can be switched off.

SlideVerse Pro adds coverflow, cube, flip, cards and creative transitions, an image lightbox and popup video, fraction and progress pagination, a scrollbar, vertical before/after, a WooCommerce Product Slider, a Dynamic Content Slider for any post type, taxonomy or custom field, and templates — from $19.99 a year. Remove Pro and your sliders keep working with the free options.
