Best Animated Background Plugins for WordPress (2026): WebGL, Particles and More

Animation Kit, Marvy, Premium Addons, Slider Hero and Light Particles compared on free effects, builders, sections, mobile and reduced motion.

The best animated background plugin for WordPress depends on your builder. Animation Kit works with any theme and gives you six free WebGL effects site-wide or on a Group or Cover block, with phone and reduced-motion fallbacks. Marvy and Premium Addons are Elementor addons, with Premium Addons' particles in Pro. Slider Hero builds animated hero sliders.

Disclosure: WPXERO makes Animation Kit; this comparison covers version 0.5.0. Everything said here about the other plugins comes from their WordPress.org readmes, linked in each section, as of October 25, 2026.

Animation Kit — best free option for any theme

Animation Kit draws a moving WebGL canvas behind your whole site, or behind one Group or Cover block such as a hero. Pick one of six effects or a ready-made look from the gallery, set your colours and turn it on — no shortcode, CSS or video file.

The free version has no locked controls. It includes a readability overlay so text on top stays legible, a live preview on your theme's real page and text colours, Copy look / Paste look between backgrounds and sites, and an On phones setting per background: full animation, a lighter version, a still image or nothing.

Performance is handled carefully: the script loads only on pages with a background, each effect is a separate file loaded after the page is interactive, animation pauses when the tab is hidden or the background scrolls out of view, and reduced-motion, Save-Data and no-WebGL visitors get a still image without downloading WebGL code. Compatibility filters ship for WP Rocket, LiteSpeed Cache, Autoptimize, W3 Total Cache and WP Fastest Cache. You can try every effect live.

What Pro adds: 17 more effects (23 in total) — Color Bends, Dot Grid, Floating Lines, Gradient Blinds, Iridescence, Liquid Ether, Plasma, Prism, Starfield and more — motion, size and interaction controls for every effect, layered backgrounds with blend modes, per-page targeting, CSS-selector targeting for Elementor, Bricks and WPBakery sections, position, z-index and opacity, and priority support. Pro starts at $14.99 a year, or $49.99 lifetime.

Where it falls short: no Elementor widget — animating one Elementor section needs Pro's CSS-selector targeting.

Marvy — Elementor section animations

Marvy adds background animations to Elementor sections — ripple, rotate, drop, flying objects, wave, rings, topology, gradient, snow and cloud — with a paid version on CodeCanyon.

Watch out for: Elementor only, and its readme lists testing up to WordPress 6.8.

Premium Addons — if you already have Pro

Premium Addons offers a Particles container addon and an Animated Gradient container addon, both marked Pro in its readme, for Elementor containers.

Slider Hero — animated hero sliders

Slider Hero builds hero sliders and intro sequences with animated backgrounds such as particles, with a Gutenberg block and Elementor widget. It's a slider builder rather than a background layer for your existing content.

Light Particles — simple particles

Light Particles shows particles everywhere or on one page, with quantity, speed and opacity settings.

Common Questions

Animation Kit is the most complete free option that isn't tied to a page builder — six WebGL effects, a site-wide background and section backgrounds on Group and Cover blocks, with phone and reduced-motion fallbacks. Marvy and Premium Addons are Elementor addons; Slider Hero builds animated hero sliders.

Yes. Animation Kit's free version has no locked controls and includes Aurora, Antigravity, Particles, Silk, Light Pillar and Radar in your own colours. Marvy Lite and Light Particles are also free.

Yes. Animation Kit works with any theme and adds backgrounds from one admin screen, plus an Animated background switch on Group and Cover blocks in the block editor. Marvy and Premium Addons need Elementor.

They use the visitor's GPU, so the setup matters. Animation Kit loads only on pages with a background, splits each effect into its own file loaded after the page is interactive, pauses when off-screen, and lets you give phones a lighter version, a still image or nothing.

In Animation Kit they get a still image in the background's colours, and no WebGL code is downloaded. The same fallback applies to Save-Data visitors and browsers without WebGL.

With Animation Kit Pro, yes — per-page targeting covers the front page, blog, chosen pages and posts, post types, categories, tags, archives, search results and the 404 page. The free version has one site-wide background plus per-block section backgrounds.
